What mechanisms are being studied?

Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide widely distributed throughout the CNS and PNS. It acts through VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors to regulate vasodilation, bronchodilation, gut motility, circadian rhythm control, and immune modulation. It has potent anti-inflammatory properties.

What are the research questions?

• Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH): Inhaled VIP reduced pulmonary artery pressure in clinical studies.
• CIRS / Mold illness: Used in the Shoemaker protocol for CIRS/mold biotoxin illness — intranasal VIP is the final treatment step.
• Inflammatory bowel disease: Anti-inflammatory effects in the GI tract.
• Asthma / bronchospasm: Natural bronchodilator.
• Circadian rhythm disorders: Regulates the suprachiasmatic nucleus (master circadian clock).

What does the published work describe?

Petkov V et al. (J Clin Invest 2003) — Inhaled VIP reduced pulmonary artery pressure and improved cardiac output in PAH. Shoemaker RC et al. — Intranasal VIP improved pulmonary function, quality of life, and inflammatory biomarkers in CIRS patients.
